1) Neurotransmitter release is crucial for neuronal communication in the brain. We study the mechanistic basis of neurotransmitter release at the synapse.
2) Glutamate receptor trafficking is a critical process for synaptic plasticity, learning and memory. We study the mechanisms underlying glutamate receptor trafficking to the surface of postsynaptic neurons (collaboration with Dr. Liang Zhang, UHN)
3) We study how light-sensitive photoreceptors transmit signals to second-order neurons in the retina. We believe that this process is critical for the information processing in the retina and vision (collaboration with Drs. Philippe Monnier, Valerie Wallace, Liang Zhang, UHN)
4) We investigate the mechanisms by which immune cells release toxic substances to kill cancer cells and pathogens.
5) We investigate the mechanisms by which mast cells release histamine and other inflammatory mediators (collaboration with Dr. Hao Xu, University of Southern Mississippi, USA)
6) We study membrane trafficking in myelin formation and how changes to this process lead to immune disorders. Identifying the mechanisms of demyelination is important for developing treatments for demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis (collaboration with Dr. Philippe Monnier, UHN)
