ATTENTION! One Time Password (OTP) keys for remote access to the UHN network have been phased out. Staff who continue to use OTP and for any outstanding questions, please email DigitalResearch@uhn.ca.

For UHN staff to connect to the research network remotely, please use VPN (Virtual Private Network) where possible:
  • For more information about how to set this up, please go to the Working Remotely with VPN page (uhnresearch.ca -> NEWS -> Working Remotely with VPN)
  • Note: When connecting through this method, you may lose connection to local resources such as your printer at home
For non-UHN users of UHN applications and services, please await instructions from your UHN contact once an alternative solution has been determined.

Other helpful resources: If you have any technical issues with setting up or using VPN, please contact RIS Helpdesk.

  How does this work?

There are several ways to check in and access internal or protected resources from afar. Identify your options by choosing your identity. Are you staff or are you a collaborator (TASHN hospitals, vendors, etc.)?   I'm Not Using Windows

If you are viewing this page with a Windows device, you have a built-in Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) client. Otherwise you may need to install one.

Remote Access - Full Portal

  How does this work?

This is the authenticator for the full remote access portal that serves both staff and our collaborators. You will need one-time passwords (OTPs) to proceed. One-time passwords are temporary passwords used only once to gain a window of opportunity to connect to resources that would otherwise be reachable only from inside the network. Once you use a password, it is no longer valid. Upon unlocking your portal, some resources may require additional credentials (desktops, web applications, etc.). If you do not already have one-time passwords, please call the Helpdesk at 416-581-7777 for assistance.

Direct Access via Tethering

Want to skip one-time passwords? Tethering is the act of connecting devices together, usually by leveraging your existing internet connection. When you tether, you are creating a private tunnel between you and UHN. This is your secure, encrypted pathway into the network that makes resources appear to be local to your UHN-managed device. Tethering requires no additional authentication, including one-time passwords. Call the Helpdesk at 416-581-7777 for more information.
