The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has announced the results of its Fall 2024 Project Grant funding competition. The Project Grant program is designed to support ideas that will advance health-related knowledge, research methodologies, patient care, and overall outcomes.

For this round of funding, 30 research teams at UHN were awarded over $22.5 million, spanning 26 full research grants and four priority announcement grants. Nationwide, 453 full research grants were funded for a total investment of $411 million. Additionally, 105 priority announcement grants received $14.1 million and 16 supplemental prizes were awarded $400,000.

Among the funded projects, Dr. Quynh Pham is expanding Medly, a proven digital heart failure management program, to sites across Canada, the UK, and Australia to improve remote care and reduce hospitalizations. Dr. Shane Harding’s team is investigating how cancer treatments trigger cytokine release, a process that can influence immune responses and treatment side effects, to enhance therapy effectiveness. Dr. Robert Chen is advancing transcranial ultrasound stimulation as a non-invasive alternative to deep brain stimulation for Parkinson, offering a potential breakthrough in treatment.

From improving traumatic brain injury screening to advancing lung transplant innovations, UHN researchers continue to push the boundaries of health research. Congratulations to all the awardees for their outstanding contributions to advancing health research.
