Posted On: June 27, 2016
The highest scientific honour awarded by the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) was bestowed upon TGHRI Clinical Researcher Dr. Tirone David. The AATS Scientific Achievement Award recognizes Dr. David’s enormous contributions to the field of cardiothoracic surgery.
With over 320 publications within his field, Dr. David is a world-renowned expert in cardiac surgery, clinical outcomes of surgical treatments, and disorders of the heart valve, blood vessels and connective tissues. Dr. David’s contributions to surgical innovation are demonstrated through his pioneering of a procedure known as valve-sparing aortic replacement (the “David procedure”). The procedure enables a patient’s heart valve to be preserved during aortic aneurysm repair surgery, which improves patient quality of life by avoiding the necessity for lifelong anticoagulation therapy.
The award was presented to Dr. David on May 16, 2016. A UHN researcher, TGHRI Senior Scientist Dr. Richard Weisel, previously received the award in 2010.
