Three UHN researchers were featured on the Canadian Cancer Society's (CCS) list of Top 10 Research Impact Stories of 2015. Drs. Senthil Muthuswamy, John Dick and Daniel De Carvalho were joined by seven other researchers from across Canada that, according the CCS, “exemplify the very best of what science can achieve through dedicated investment.”
The featured research was published in prestigious journals and presented findings that were relevant to all Canadians, while demonstrating the full breadth cancer research that has been funded by the CCS. PM Senior Scientist Dr. Muthuswamy’s study was published in Nature Medicine and detailed a method to create three-dimensional “mini-tumours” called organoids. These organoids, which originate from human pancreatic cancer cells, are being used to test new therapeutics for pancreatic cancer.
By using a new cell sorting method, PM Senior Scientist Dr. John Dick was able to provide a revised model for blood production that challenges current views on how blood is produced. The findings, published in Science, will help scientists gain more insight on how different blood disorders develop.
In a paper published in Cell, PM Scientist Dr. Daniel De Carvalho identified a new anticancer mechanism by analyzing how the cancer therapeutic, decitabine, is able to target colorectal cancer stem cells. His finding revealed that decitabine causes the cancer cells to behave like they are infected with viruses. As a consequence of this, the cells are targeted and cleared by the immune system.
