Dr. Jenny Heathcote, former Senior Scientist at TWRI, is the recipient of the 2015 UHN Global Impact Award.
The award recognizes UHN staff who have changed the world of health and health care. Dr. Heathcote received the honour for her seminal research on viral hepatitis (B and C), autoimmune liver disease and primary biliary cirrhosis. Her findings have provided key insights into the transmission of viral hepatitis and the underlying molecular pathways that govern treatment response in primary biliary cirrhosis.
Through her career, which spanned more than 30 years at the University of Toronto, Dr. Heathcote delivered hundreds of lectures, published more than 350 papers in the field of hepatology, and left a lasting impression on medical residents and fellows through her dedicated mentorship.
In a farewell symposium held in her honour by the Canadian Liver Foundation in October 2013, it was stated that, "Jenny has built up a world-renowned liver unit and fostered many new initiatives… Good scientists are not only credited for their achievements but more importantly for the legacy they leave behind."
Dr. Heathcote joins 18 other recipients who have been recognized with this award since 2004.
