By: Candice Tang, ORT Communication Assistant
The ORT welcomes Dr. Amanda Veri, a former Research Associate at the University of Toronto and dedicated science communicator, to the role of ORT Lead of Research Training Programs. Learn more about Amanda, below.
ORT: Tell us about your educational and work background.
Amanda Veri (AV): I did my undergrad degree in Biochemistry at McMaster University and was part of a co-op program that allowed me to explore many different research environments. I fell in love with the vibrant research community in Toronto and settled here for my PhD in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto. After graduating, I worked as a research associate for two years, where I managed research programs and trained and mentored graduate and undergraduate students.
ORT: What are you looking forward to the most in your new role?
AV: I am so excited to get to meet and connect with UHN trainees from all the different centres and find out what kind of training programs they want to see more of! I love interacting with trainees and I hope that together we can identify areas where the ORT can help to improve their training experiences! I am also excited to bring my extensive experience in organizing career development workshops and training programs to help trainees to identify and achieve their varied career goals.
ORT: What interests do you have outside of research?
AV: I love engaging in science communication and outreach, especially if I get to share my love of microbiology using living agar art, crocheted microbes, or talking about zombies! I also love hiking, cooking and baking elaborate meals, reading and doing all kinds of crafts!
