Dr. Murray Urowitz named recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from Lupus Ontario.

Krembil Senior Scientist Dr. Murray Urowitz was named recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by Lupus Ontario. The award was granted for his “loyal dedication, unwavering commitment and outstanding contribution to research and patient care in systemic lupus erythematosus."
In 1970, Dr. Urowitz established a cohort of patients that have since been followed prospectively using rigorous clinical and immunological measures. Over 1870 patients are currently included in the database, which is one of the largest in the world. This approach has led to improved management and diagnosis of lupus and has laid the foundation for the establishment of the Centre for Prognosis Studies in The Rheumatic Diseases. Added to this, Dr. Urowitz has published over 370 peer-reviewed papers and 40 book chapters. He has supervised the training of over 130 fellows in rheumatology.
This latest honour accompanies other prestigious distinctions, including: his past role as president of the Lupus Council of the American Rheumatology Association; the Distinguished Rheumatologist Award from the Canadian Rheumatology Association (1995); the Master Designation from the American College of Rheumatology (2004)—one of the highest honours bestowed by the College; and the Evelyn V. HESS Award for outstanding contributions to lupus research from the Lupus Foundation of America (2009).
